About this opportunity
The University of Sydney, during an exciting and innovative period, welcomes applications for Sydney horizon educators in the academic disciplines outlined below. With the launch of the new University of Sydney enterprise agreement 2023-26, the university is committed to establishing and advertising new continuing education-focused (EF) academic positions in the Faculty of science.

The goal of the university is to attract and retain the best and brightest emerging academics. Positions in this opportunity are for gifted teachers, who demonstrate passion and excellence towards performance, educational practice and innovation, and research potential (in disciplinary and/or education-related research). This newly appointed group of teachers will support improving teaching ability and student experience at the University of Sydney, as well as developing into a leader in education at the University.
You will have the opportunity to make significant contributions to the design, delivery and evaluation of teaching and learning in your area of expertise, as well as you will also contribute to research related to your discipline and/or your educational practice. As part of this role, you will also contribute to the administration, leadership, and engagement work of your employer school, especially when it relates to education.
Successful candidates will be expected to devote most of their contributions to teaching and teaching-related activities (70%), as well as research (20%) and governance, leadership and engagement (10%). Successful placement supports, coordinates and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate course study units. Laboratory tutorials, studio class delivery, and workshop management and teaching can also be the main roles. These positions may also assist and guide academic coordinators of other units within the discipline.
Over time, staff assigned to these roles will be assisted in connecting with professional development opportunities to build the capacity to lead change and improvement in teaching throughout the University.
Your main responsibilities will be:
Play a leadership role in educational innovation, curriculum design and Review, contributing to excellent educational delivery and outcomes
Design and engage high-quality teaching and learning experiences that meet the University’s expectations and standards for education.
Provide better teaching and learning outcomes for students
Develop teaching and unit content while working with other senior academics of the University
Related work, including laboratory and / or field work, maintaining and managing health and safety requirements
Contribute knowledge in your discipline or area of expertise through research and scholarly creative work, especially when it relates to teaching and learning in your discipline.
Develop and improve your educational research skills, especially when they are related to the evaluation and improvement of teaching and learning in your discipline.
Maintain high quality, standard and excellence in your educational activities and output
Contribute to governance, leadership and participatory work in your school.

School of chemistry
The school of chemistry welcomes applications from talented tertiary teachers for two teaching-focused positions:
Lecturer (Director, first year chemistry laboratories) (teaching focused) Level B
Lecturer (Director, second & third year chemistry laboratories)
Successful candidates will be responsible for the design and delivery of a contemporary graduate laboratory teaching program in chemistry. They will work with Unit coordinators, lecturers, technical and administrative support teams to provide an engaging, enriching, motivating and student-centered Laboratory Program, ensure its integration with cognitive units in our comprehensive chemistry curriculum and other disciplines, and run a cycle of learning. Of reflective teaching practice and continuous improvement. Key aspects of this role include development of new practicals, supervision of laboratory classrooms, evaluation design, maintaining safety, and leadership of the demonstrator team.
School of Mathematics & Statistics

Successful candidates in the school of mathematics and statistics will lead the operation of our large first year and second year units and therefore must have the ability to coordinate large sized units and teach first year or second units on statistics, mathematics or practical mathematics. They must have a strong, full-time and long-term commitment to mathematics education.
Physics School
The school of physics welcomes applications from gifted tertiary teachers for two Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (education focused) positions.
Lecturer in physics (education focused) Level B
Senior lecturer in Physics (Laboratory Supervisor/director) (education focused) Level C
The school of physics is a vibrant teaching and research community. One of the successful candidates will play a leading role in running our experimental laboratory graduate teaching program and innovating within this program. The other appointee will contribute to teaching innovation and curriculum development in areas including experimental laboratory, interdisciplinary physics, or computational physics teaching. A PhD in physics or closely related field is required.
School of psychology
Senior lecturer in psychology (education focused) Level C
The school of psychology welcomes applications from gifted tertiary teachers for the position of senior lecturer (education focused). The successful candidate will contribute to excellence in teaching and curriculum development in one or more areas of psychology, such as Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, Learning, personality and Individual Differences, neuroscience, health psychology, clinical psychology, statistics, but not limited to. First year lecturer in biology-human or molecular biology (education focused) level B. The successful candidate will have experience in coordinating large first-year units and expertise in human or molecular biology, as well as being able to teach first-year biology more broadly. .
Lecturer (education focused) Level B in molecules, cells and organisms. The successful candidate will have experience in coordinating second and third year level units with expertise in Biochemistry, Molecular and cellular biology, or genetics and genomics.
Senior lecturer in animal science and wildlife conservation (education focused) level C. The successful candidate will have Course Design and delivery experience in animal science and Wildlife Conservation with external stakeholders and industry. They will have experience in coordinating large first-year units on human interaction with animals and will contribute to the development and distribution of intermediate and senior units of study.
Sydney School of Veterinary Science
Associate professor in Veterinary Clinical Pathology (education focused) level d
The Sydney School of Veterinary Science welcomes applications from gifted tertiary teachers for the position Associate Professor (education-focused). The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and curriculum development in Veterinary Clinical Pathology. Specialist qualifications in Veterinary Clinical Pathology allowing registration with the NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board are required. The successful candidate will have experience in the global veterinary education accreditation process and will be willing to contribute to ongoing curriculum improvement and accreditation preparedness for the school.

A developing network of relationships with partners and stakeholders from major academic, industry or professional institutions
Demonstrated experience in supervising or advising others and/or coordinating team activities
Good teaching and learning experience, and the ability to contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels in lectures, tutorials and practical settings.
High level of interpersonal skills, including the ability to work together with colleagues
A record of excellent teaching, learning and assessment practice in a tertiary environment, as evidenced through student and Observer feedback
High level written and oral communication skills
Ability to engage students and enable a supportive, inclusive learning environment
Proven experience in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives
Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching
Ability to work closely with other employees, including professional staff, and promote the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion.
Senior lecturers, who may demonstrate in addition to the above:
Their knowledge and understanding of key, strategic, education-related issues in the higher education sector and/or university
Their experience as an effective unit, course or program coordinator or director (especially for large classes), as evidenced by student and staff feedback
Some experience in the leadership of people in the higher education sector
Significant competence in educational leadership, service, governance and engagement (either through their work at a university or through collaboration with a non-university organization).
Associate professors, who may demonstrate in addition to the above:
Service, governance and engagement through his prior work in university and / or complex non-university organizations
Their ability to attract national-competitive research funding, particularly from the Australian Research Council
Leadership discipline of curriculum development enhances student learning in the curriculum
Their ability to receive competitive grant funds for their education scholarships
The level of the post will be determined based on the skills, experience and knowledge of the candidate evaluated by the selection committee.
